Artist Statement

Correspondence. Bright-tipped leaves. Soles packed with hunks of earth.

It's the simple things like trees and trails and humble life stories that bring me to a wild pause. I get lost in observation and in the depth of wordy tales. I find fulfillment in recording energy - that which stirs a swirling breeze, a mighty light, laughter, tears, a tender touch. My work sifts through the pages of a moment to arrive plainly at the core. It is then, through the action of painting, that I am able to process a medley of emotional information and freely let it go.

Loosely composed with the knowledge of color, texture, line, and shape, my paintings naturally unfold. Beginning with a foundation of spontaneously painted content, I intuitively respond by building layers of acrylic glazes, drawing, writing, scumbling, collaging, concealing, and scraping back to the origins underneath until an active, dialogue emerges. Saturated with a history of reflective gestures and personal marks, my surfaces allow my wanderings through relationship, solitude, and sense of spirit to coalesce, rise, and then sit still.

My aim is not to replicate, but to feel my way around a canvas with attention and intention, leaving behind only an outcome to ponder. No stroke is ever wasted. They are all authentic responses that deepen a heartfelt conversation. These assemblages of choice and care are translations of my journey - one of ordinary moments, collective memories, connection, whim, and light.
