CHARLOTTE TERRELL

Born and reared in Columbus, Mississippi, Charlotte Terrell's love for painting was inspired by her hometown’s admiration of fine art and historic architecture.  Her ancestral home, Waverly, one of Mississippi’s most noteworthy antebellum homes, is adorned in finely crafted 19th century painted finishes and works of art.  These were a strong influence on Charlotte's future painting choices of traditional 19th century style dog portraiture and contemporary painting grounded in centuries old painted finishes and trompe-l'oeil techniques.

Charlotte Terrell attended the University of Georgia where she studied fine arts and received a degree in landscape architecture.   She gained professional experience in the restoration of historic landscapes and landmarks as a landscape architect for New York City Department of Parks.  While in New York, Charlotte studied at Parsons School of Design and mastered the craft of mid 19th century decorative painting through the Isabel O’Neil School of Antique and Art Restoration.

Developing her own techniques over twenty years, Charlotte has become a highly regarded artist of painted finishes. Her exploration of  layering paint, plaster, gild and wax has evolved into her work of mixed media on canvas.  These intricate finishes supply the backgrounds for subject matters derived from her interests in the decorative and design arts.  The result is art crafted with an appreciation of old world techniques and a modern sensibility.

Her fascination of some of the premier dog painting artists of the 19th and 20th century such as Maud Earl, Arthur Wardle, John Sargent Noble and Sir Edwin Henry Landseer, led her to study dog portraiture with mentor under Bob Bertram, a highly regarded and avidly collected dog portraitists.  She has also studied under such noted artists as Shane Neal, David Gallup and Greg Decker. Capturing the expressions and personalities of canine subjects in oils is inspired by her muse, Quincy, a Blenheim Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.

Ms. Terrell’s dog paintings have been featured at the Bennett Gallery in Nashville, Tennessee.   Her paintings are exclusive and commissioned pieces of art and grace the homes of many Nashvillians where she resides today.
